More about Prof. Kannikeswaran’s talk

The temple legacy of India is one of the country's best secrets. Thousands of temples dot the skyline of India, yet precious little is known of how they have contributed to the cultural landscape. The Indian way of life recognizes several ways to connect to the Universality of creation - in the form of Shiva, Shakti, Vishnu, Ganesha, Skanda, Surya and many other ishta-devatas. Temples dedicated to these deities personify traditions from the Vedas, the itihasas, the puranas and also the local 'sthala-puranas'. The bhakti movements in various parts of India also have a lot to do with temple traditions. Clusters of temples are also related through sthala-puranas. The architectural and sculptural wealth of some of these living centers of tradition is also amazing. This multimedia presentation on the Temples of India is a fascinating journey through temple history, Indian political history, architectural styles, music traditions and more.

Kanniks Kannikeswaran who will be presenting this talk is a musician/composer/educator and a scholar known for his work on Indian temples and the music of India. He has been sharing information on Indian temples through his website www.templenet.com . More on Kanniks can be seen at www.kanniks.com .
